My Honest Review of The Burberry Trench Coat

As I’ve been sharing more product reviews lately, I realized there was one essential designer piece in my wardrobe that I’d completely left out. So today, I’m going to be breaking down all the details of my favorite Burberry trench coat. For the longest time, I’d buy trench coats from more affordable brands like Zara, Banana Republic, Mango, and the likes – but I always dreamt of investing in a Burberry trench. A few years ago, I finally bit the bullet and haven’t looked back since. It’s been one of the best wardrobe investments I’ve made to date. The coat has proven to be a truly timeless and seasonless piece. In case you didn’t know, today’s design is almost identical to when it was first created decades ago.
If you have been thinking about investing in a Burberry trench coat, keep scrolling for my honest review and my answers to the most frequently asked questions…
Which Burberry Trench Coat Do You Have?
The exact Burberry trench coat I purchased is the mid-length Sandringham trench, which is no longer available. This particular style has been discontinued, but the Chelsea Slim Fit is the newer option. It features the same narrow shoulders, a nipped-in waist and overall slimmer silhouette.
Burberry trench coats come in a few different cuts and lengths, but the most popular styles outside of the Chelsea are the Kensington and Westminster. The Kensington features a classic, straight cut while the Westminster is more relaxed. I prefer the Chelsea fit (former Sandringham) because of the tailored, feminine look. I just found it to be the most flattering style on my petite frame – and loved the way it looked whether it’s opened or buttoned up.
Given my height, I’m also partial to the mid-length cut versus the longer ones. It hits right above my knees, which in my opinion, looks the most classic.
What Size To Buy?
I went with a US 2 (IT 36), but I probably could’ve sized up given the trim fit of the Sandringham trench coat. I wear my trench coat throughout the year and admit that it does get a little snug with chunkier knits underneath. If you do plan on going with the Chelsea, I would recommend sizing up so that it’ll be more comfortable to layer.
Is It Waterproof?
As noted on the Burberry site, their heritage trench coats are not waterproof. However, they are made from water-repellent cotton gabardine, which has been woven in a way that prevents water from entering the fabric. That being said, they are designed to protect you against wind and rain. I personally find the Burberry trench coat to be warm enough in the spring and fall.
How To Care For It?
The Burberry trench coat is one of those investment pieces that will last for years as long as you properly care for it. I follow the instructions given on the Burberry site, which is to get it professionally dry-cleaned. Even though I’ve worn mine for years now, it has maintained its water-repellent properties and shape.
Where To Buy It?
You can purchase any Burberry trench coat directly from the Burberry site or at a local boutique. The more popular styles I listed above are also available at most luxury retailers, including Nordstrom, Net-A-Porter, Saks Fifth Avenue, MyTheresa, and Matches Fashion. All these retailers have generous shipping and return policies, so you really can’t go wrong.
Is It Worth The Price? Would You Buy It Again?
The Burberry trench coat comes with a hefty price tag that’s hard to swallow. However, if you have the budget for one and know you’ll wear it often, it’s absolutely worth it. I’ve gotten so much wear out of mine and I don’t regret a single penny. It’s not only timeless and functional, but makes every single outfit feel so much more polished. I also love that it goes with everything in my wardrobe.
