Save Vs. Splurge: Summer Vacation Style

As summer is now in full swing with a long holiday weekend coming up, I’m pretty sure most of you have vacations lined up whether it’s a tropical destination or a nearby getaway. Whatever that may be for you, it calls for a vacation wardrobe update! Shopping for new summer vacation outfits have been quite the challenge this year considering we had to give them up entirely last year. I find myself wanting everything from playful, flirty dresses to updated basics. The reality is that you probably don’t need that many new pieces. I wanted to put together this guide to show you exactly where it’s worth putting your money – and where you might be better off saving.
Where I Splurge…
Zimmermann Dress (also similar here, also love this one) | Alexandre Birman Bow Tie Sandals | Saint Laurent Envelope Bag (large size)
Statement Dresses
I love taking advantage of the opportunity to glam up for a night out, but the reality is that you’ll probably only have one special occasion to dress up when you’re on vacation. So, you really only need one or two splurge-worthy dresses to look and feel your best. Try to go for pieces that can be worn day and night so you can continue to wear it even when you’re back home.
Song of Style Crop Top | Song of Style Wide Leg Pants | Fendi Sunshine Shopper (also here) | Similar Hat
Matching Set (also a save)
There are plenty of cute affordable matching sets, but I recommend spending a little more on nicer sets that can stand the test of time. The fact that they can be styled separately make them more worthwhile too.
Tularosa Bikini Set (here & here) | Camilla Coelho Crochet Skirt | Shopbop Natural Crossbody Bag | Stuart Weitzman Pearl Thong Sandals | Similar Straw Hat | Gucci-Inspired Ribbon
Swimwear
Swimwear isn’t something I buy year-round, so when I do buy them, I prefer to go for quality pieces that I can wear again the following year. They’re typically made with better materials that hold their shape and color, making them worth every penny.
Express Matching Set (here and here) | Rag & Bone Panama Hat (better for budget here) | Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Tote (on sale with code 10MARIA)
Handbags
There are so many reasons to invest in a designer bag – but my favorite is that they create a foundation for my wardrobe. Whether I’m pairing them with casual, everyday outfits, resort wear or tailored separates, they never feel out of place. I prefer totes when I’m en route to my destination, but love crossbody bags (like this one) when I’m out and exploring.
Tularosa Ribbed Tank (exact style sold out, similar here and here) | Song of Style Midi Skirt (sold out, similar here) | Chanel Sandals (better for budget here) | Bottega Veneta Sunglasses | Fendi Sunshine Tote (also love this one)
Shoes
Designer shoes, in general, are way more comfortable than their more affordable counterparts. That’s why I always pack one or two designer shoes with me. Plus, I love how they make any outfit look more expensive.
Where I Save…
Abercrombie Cutout Knit Dress (also love this one) | Bottega Veneta Padded Cassette Bag | Bottega Veneta Sunglasses | The Styled Collection Necklaces (here and here)
Day Dresses
I’ll splurge on a show-stopping dress with intricate details, but will save on more simple ones made from ribbed knit and cotton. I’ve been loving anything with cutout details this season – they’re so sexy and feminine.
Abercrombie Linen Top | Abercrombie High-Waisted Jeans | Revolve Pearl Hoop Earrings | Bottega Veneta The Pouch Bag
Casual Tops
When it comes to summer tops, I try to keep my selections under $100 because trends change so fast! It’s rare that I’ll wear them again the following year. Lately, I’ve been finding the best styles at Abercrombie, Express, Nordstrom & H&M.
Express Matching Set (here and here) | Rag & Bone Panama Hat (better for budget here) | Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Tote (on sale with code 10MARIA) | Alexandre Birman Heels
Matching Set (also a splurge)
The matching set trend is definitely worth saving on too since there are so many cute styles available at Asos, Express, Abercrombie, and more.
Goodnight Macaroon White Top | Goodnight Macaroon Clutch | Goodnight Macaroon Pearl Sandals | Goodnight Macaroon Denim Shorts
Trendy Sandals
There’s no shame in wanting to put your best foot forward when you’re on vacation. I’ll typically pack some trendy and budget-friendly sandals for the pool or when I’m doing a lot of walking so that I don’t ruin my designer shoes.
Jade Swim Yellow Bikini Set (here & here) | Shopbop Sarong | Shopbop Natural Crossbody Bag | Bottega Veneta Aviator Sunglasses | Chloe Woody Sandals
Woven Accessories
Finally, there’s no shortage of raffia bags, straw totes, and woven hats for the beach. Since these are more seasonal pieces, it’s perfectly fine to go after more affordable options. I find that they tend to be more durable by nature, so you don’t have to worry about them falling apart – even if you skimped on quality.
