What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Phil and I spent this past weekend in San Antonio for one of our best friend’s engagement party – which was actually a surprise wedding. It was such an exciting day and we were lucky enough to be in on the surprise because Phil officiated the wedding! It’s definitely a day we’ll remember forever for so many reasons. I’m so happy for the beautiful couple and so proud of Phil for doing an amazing ceremony. It was our first time in San Antonio and we stayed at the Omni La Mansión del Rio – which is situated right on the River Walk. It was the perfect location to be able to explore the city especially since we had such a short amount of time to do so. The historic hotel was beautiful and I love that the hotel was featured in one of my favorite movies, Selena. I can’t wait to go back! Quite a few of you messaged me about the dress I wore to the wedding so today I wanted to share a few ideas on what to wear to a fall wedding.
Although spring and summer are the timeframes traditionally labeled as “wedding season”, fall has increased in popularity over the years. This comes as no surprise to me since the colorful leaves and mild weather creates a naturally beautiful backdrop and pleasant environment. As a wedding guest, I find that it can be tricky deciding what to wear to a fall wedding because the weather can be unpredictable. I always want to wear something more appropriate for fall weather, but in San Antonio it was almost 90 degrees. I went with a romantic maxi dress that was actually perfect for the weather. Today, I’ve put together a list of wedding guest looks that are not only chic, but seasonably appropriate.
Dark Lace Dress
I cannot think of a more romantic fabric than lace, making it the ideal material to wear to an equally romantic event. In order to take it a step further and make it fit for an autumn wedding, dark lace is the key. Colors like black, burgundy, hunter green, and navy are stunning and strike the perfect balance between alluring and elegant. You can opt for a dress with lace all over or one with slight touches of dark lace via sleeve details or a keyhole back.
Long-Sleeve Dress
The return of cold, brisker weather makes the long-sleeve dress an optimal choice for attending a fall wedding. There are many variations of this dress style, so there is bound to be a long sleeve option for everyone. Personally, when looking for a long sleeved dress, I adore details such as sequin, off-the-shoulder necklines, or deep-V cuts. For a trendy take on the long-sleeve dress, try an all-over glittery piece.
Velvet Dress
Velvet is one of those fabrications that always makes a grandeur return every year for the fall and winter season. You can make this rich and eye-catching material appear even more luxe by opting for seasonal jewel tones. I find honey gold, deep plum, black, and dark emerald so captivating. One of my favorite velvet variations is the wrap dress. Not only is it romantic and feminine, but this silhouette is flattering on every body type.
Satin Dress
If the fall wedding you are attending is more of a formal, black tie affair, I can think of no better option than to go with something silky. Satin dresses are inherently lavish and posh, which is perfect for special occasions like weddings. Since satin dresses tend to have slip style silhouettes, you can add a sleek scarf or faux fur shawl to dress it up even more. Thigh-high slits, ruffles, and high-low hemlines are a few elements I look for in a satin dress.
Maxi Dress
Lastly, one can never go wrong with a maxi dress for a fall wedding. Maxi dresses in darker fall colors or moody florals and patterns are great alternatives to some of the dressier options above. Pair it with duster earrings in a contrasting color or a waist belt to create a look that’s effortless and romantic. This happens to be one of my favorite dress styles for fall because the flowy, floor-skimming length keeps your legs warm if it gets too breezy.
